2018 Firefighting and Emergency Evacuation Drill Carried out in International Campus

November 16 witnessed a firefighting and emergency evacuation drill at No. 1 Residential College, which is the prelude of the firefighting season of this year.

The Assistant President of ZJU, Secretary of Party Working Committee and Vice Dean of International Campus, ZJU, Fu Qiang, commanded the drill. The Director of Safety and Security Department of ZJU, Mr. Chen Wei, the Political Instructor of Haining Fire Department Mr. Ma Jieli were on site to oversee the drill. Directors of the Office of Campus Development and Management (CDM), Office of Student Affairs, Office of Human Resources, and Vice Dean of No.1 Residential College organized the drill. More than 400 people including all undergraduates, postgraduates, new faculty members of 2018 and other students participated in this drill, which was hosted by Qu Lijuan.

Mr. Fu Qiang announced the start of the drill at 12:20 pm. Smoke rushing out from the 5th floor at the 5th zone of No. 1 RC, triggered the fire alarm, and CDM acted immediately after receiving the alarm. Order maintenance team, firefighters, medical team, support team and newsgroup were called to work on site. All teachers and students were evacuated from stairs to the courtyard of No. 1 RC. Firefighters and the medical team were ready within 5 minutes. At 12:30 am, firefighters rushed into the smoke zone for firefighting and rescue. A wounded was sent out to the medical team for treatment. At 12:35 pm, the “fire” was extinguished.

Mr. Ma Jieli made comments on the drill, and the volunteer firefighters demonstrated how to use the fire extinguishers.

Mr. Chen Wei made a summary speech where he expressed sincere gratitude to all participants. He affirmed the fire safety achievements of the International Campus and stressed the significance of fire safety work.

This fire drill popularized the fire safety knowledge, enhanced the fire safety awareness among teachers and students, and improved survival skills for teachers and students as well as the campus’s capacity of dealing with fire emergencies.
