On the afternoon of April 30th, more than 70 Chinese and foreign faculty and staff members and students from the International Campus, ZJU experienced the amazing speed of the Hangzhou-Haining Intercity Rail during the test ride.
“The intuitive feeling is fast”, said the participant who attended the trial ride. Hangzhou Metro Line 1, Line 2 and other subway lines have a top speed of 80 kilometers per hour. Hangzhou-Haining Intercity Rail is much faster in contrast to its top speed of 120 kilometers per hour.
Compared with the distance between stations of Hangzhou Metro Line 1, Line 2, Line 5, etc., Hangzhou-Haining Intercity Rail has a longer separation distance between stations, which helps to increase its running speed and boost the overall speed.
“The train is fully equipped with spacious and comfortable seats. It took about 39 minutes from the International Campus, ZJU to Yuhang Railway Station. It will be a more comfortable and convenient mean of transportation to travel from Haining to Hangzhou by taking the Hangzhou-Haining Intercity Rail”, said Li Kaixuen, an undergraduate of 2020 class.
To adapt to the high-speed running and improve the riding experience, the Hangzhou-Haining Intercity Rail utilizes a horizontal seat arrangement similar to that in the bus, with four seats in each row, two on each side, instead of the vertical seat arrangement of the Hangzhou Metro, namely seats placed along both sides of the carriage.
Meanwhile, most of the seats are blue soft-cushioned seats while some are pink priority seats, leading to a comfortable and stable feeling. Most parts of the Hangzhou-Haining Intercity Rail are elevated railway. 8 stations including Zhouwangmiao Station, Yanguan Station, Chang'an Station and Hainingxi Railway Station are elevated stations. One can enjoy the scenery outside the window.

“It’s my honor to witness the remarkable development of rail transit in recent years, whether it is my hometown Jinan, Hangzhou and Haining. In the long run, the Hangzhou-Shaoxing Intercity Rail will also soon open to traffic, and the Hangzhou-Haining Intercity Rail may extend to the east. Jiaxing is also planning a rail transit network. Shanghai subway network is also going west to Songjiang. In the future, many cities in the Yangtze River Delta, the West Lake and the Bund of Shanghai will be connected by subway-style railway transportation. In this way, perhaps we will have a deeper understanding of the concepts of urban agglomerations, urban areas and first, second, and third-tier cities.”

After the official opening of the railway, passengers who take the Hangzhou-Haining Intercity Rail can transfer to Hangzhou Metro Line 1 from the Yuhang Railway Station without leaving the station, and then travel to all parts of Hangzhou through the Hangzhou Metro network. With a single subway ticket, one could travel from Juanhu Lake to West Lake. By then, it will only take about an hour from the International Campus to Hangzhou’s urban area. The convenient travel from and to the ZJU campuses in Hangzhou favors the teachers and the students. It is reported that in addition to the 39-minute “all-stop” train, the Hangzhou-Haining Intercity Rail will also launch a 35-minute special-stop train and a 20-minute direct train. It may take even less time for teachers and students to travel to the central downtown of Hangzhou!
